Is fish consumption associated with healthy sleep and cognitive ability among children?


Sleep is very important for child’s health. A better quality sleep is as much important as healthy habits (food, drink and sport), or a safe environment in their lives.

Healthy sleep requires a sufficient amount of sleep (school-age kids and preteens need 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night), uninterrupted (good quality) sleep, and a sleep schedule according to the child’s natural daily biological rhythms (each child is unique).

Studies have shown that poor sleep quality and/or quantity in children are associated with academic and behavioural problems, as they are usually less mentally alert, more inattentive, unable to concentrate, and easily distracted; besides, they can become irritable, hyperactive or lazy. It is also associated with developmental and social difficulties, weight abnormalities, and other health problems. While a healthy sleep positively affects neurologic development and appears to be useful for the prevention of many learning and behavioural problems. Sleep problems and fatigue have been associated with lower IQ (Intellectual Quotient) whereas longer sleep duration has been associated with higher IQ and academic performance.

In this sense, a news study called “The mediating role of sleep in the fish consumption – cognitive functioning relationship” has related a frequent omega-3 rich fish consumption  with healthy sleep. It may help reduce sleep problems (better sleep quality), which may in turn benefit long-term cognitive functioning in school-aged children.
