DHA protects brain cells against the effects of alcohol

It is known that alcohol abuse causes brain damage (and other health problems), leads to inflammation and cell death, causes mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment and, in case of long-term abuse, increases the risk of dementia. Brain-imaging techniques reveal structural, functional and biochemical changes in the brain of persons who abuse alcoholic beverages.

In a recently published study, researchers exposed cultures of adult rat brain cells to high amounts of alcohol and these cell cultures were compared with cultures of brain cells exposed to the same levels of alcohol plus DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid). The outcomes showed that there was about 90% less neuroinflammation and neuronal death in the brain cells exposed to alcohol plus DHA than in the cells exposed to alcohol alone. Therefore, DHA may help to preserve brain integrity in alcohol abusers… but this doesn’t mean that people may take DHA capsules and then continue to go on abusing alcohol!
